Tsaghkadzor, Armenia, is a small yet picturesque spa town and a popular resort, situated in Kotayk Province. Nestled in a valley on the eastern slope of Mount Teghenis, this town sits at an altitude of around 1,841 meters above sea level. Tsaghkadzor, which translates to ‘gorge of flowers’, is the most celebrated skiing destination in Armenia, boasting international standard ski runs. During the Soviet era, it was a key training ground for Olympic athletes. Besides winter sports, visitors are attracted by the town’s natural beauty, clean alpine air, and cultural sites such as the 11th-century Kecharis Monastery. Summer months bring opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and relaxing in luxury hotels and wellness centers that pepper the town. Tsaghkadzor serves as a serene escape no matter the season, with landscapes transforming from green meadows in spring and summer to golden hues in autumn, and finally to pristine white with winter snow.

The Tsaghkadzor Rope Way is a premier attraction that takes guests on a scenic ride over the beautiful landscape of this mountain resort town. Tsaghkadzor, translating to ‘valley of flowers,’ truly lives up to its name, especially during the warmer months. The ropeway consists of several stages, and visitors can choose to disembark at different altitudes to enjoy hiking, have a picnic, or simply embrace the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Kecharis Monastery, nestled in the heart of Tsaghkadzor, is a monumental site that dates back to the 11th century. The monastery complex is an astonishing testament to the rich spiritual and architectural heritage of Armenia. As visitors explore the various churches, chapels, and khachkars (cross-stones), they are transported through centuries of history. Kecharis was an important religious and academic Center during the Middle Ages and its atmosphere still carries the echoes of the past. The main church, Surb Grigor (St. Gregory), and its intricate frescoes are not to be missed. The serenity and architectural beauty of Kecharis make it an ideal destination for both history enthusiasts and travellers seeking tranquillity.

Lake Sevan & Sevanavank

Lake Sevan is a large, high-altitude lake in eastern Armenia. It’s known for its beaches. Set on a narrow peninsula, the Sevanavank Monastery has 2 stone churches dating to the 9th century. To the south, Hayravank Monastery overlooks the lake from a rocky outcrop. Noratus Cemetery has hundreds of carved stone khachkar memorials. Odzaberd is a ruined fortress built by the Urartian civilization in the 8th century BC.

Lake Sevan is beautiful at any time of the year. That’s why it is used to call it “the pearl of Armenia”. The water in Sevan is rather cold, even in hot weather its temperature rarely rises above 20-22 degrees. Therefore, the swimming season on the lake is relatively short. Although, Sevan, even in the cool season, remains one of the main excursion destinations in Armenia, because there are many significant and interesting sights here.

Sevanavank is an early medieval monastery complex founded in the 9th century. However, his story begins much earlier. It is believed that before 305 AD. here was a pagan sanctuary, on the site of which a church was later erected. And it was built by Gregory the Illuminator – the founder of Christianity in Armenia. At the end of the 9th century, the monastery was rebuilt and acquired its final appearance.

Sevanavank was previously located on a small island. Later, the level of the lake dropped, turning this territory into a peninsula. The building of the monastery stands on a hill with a magnificent view of Lake Sevan and the surrounding mountains.

The fortress, renowned for its well-preserved architecture, comprises two castles connected by a crenellated curtain wall. The upper fortification, known as Sheupovari, remains intact and offers visitors a glimpse into the defensive strategies of the past. The lower fortification, though mostly in ruins, still provides a fascinating exploration. Historically, the town has had a dual identity: it was renamed “Kazbegi” during Soviet times after the writer Alexander Kazbegi, but its original name Stepantsminda (meaning “Saint Stephan”) has since been restored, though both names are still widely used.
